A Night in my Mind

Another creative writing piece: One about sleep. About anything really, as long as it's about sleep.

    Sleep doesn’t come naturally.
    It never did.
    Is it possible indeed
for a person to fully integrate their mind
    into a “normal”cycle?
    Maybe for a person.
    But not me.

    For in my dreams,
which incessantly ruin any hope of a nights rest,
    I’m not human.

I’m run wild through a mystical white and ivy green jungle.
    A jungle of pages.

    I climb into books,
    and their words become reality.
    The words become pictures,
    and the pictures become adventures.

    I’m a lioness,
    bounding
    on the hunt.
    I’m a falcon.
    Breaking clouds,
    tearing apart the rain,
    and caressing the wind.

    But my dreams often turn.
    Turn into my past,
    turn into cold desert sand,
    and turn into nightmares.

    There’s always a boy.
    Tall, brunette, smiley.
    Riding a cheap, black bicycle.
A coy exchange from the backseat of an ancient suburban.

    I don’t see him,
I can’t follow his unique smell,
    I can’t find his eyes,
    until there’s a man.
    A boy,
    a scream,
    a man,
    a blow torch.

    This is all I remember,
    and it haunts me.
    Haunts me every night.

My only hope is to turn to the moon,
and have it tell me the books are real.
    The rough, dry parchment contains
    a physical existence.
A world where I can also exist.
    A place of safety,
    a place of peace.

I pray to anyone who will listen,
    that those pages aren’t fantasy.
I pray I’ll find respite in a dream.
    Dreams of Mountains and streams,
    violets and daisies,
    horses and hot green grass.
    Spinning until I can’t stand.
    Chasing bottles tied to trees.
Listening to cellos penetrate the music of my night.
This is what I want to dream about.
    It’s what I will dream,
    maybe someday.
